I
am a furniture-maker and carver based in Scotland. My work falls within
the Northern European tradition of relief carving. However, my influences
extend
equally to figurative painting, ranging from the work of George Stubbs
to Marlene Dumas. The representation of people is central to my carved
panels, the face receiving particular attention. It is therefore the
decisive focus of my compositions.
Taking photos as an initial source of inspiration, either from newspapers
or art historical sources, I reinterpret the proportions and features
of the subjects to emphasise certain qualities.
My furniture and panels
are reminiscent of 16th and 17th century vernacular design in their
construction and patination, giving the impression of being historical
artefacts. However, on closer examination the subject-matter reveals
the contemporary origin of the work. I utilise recycled wood because
I am fascinated by the surface markings and general evidence of
human activity left on salvaged timber. This imbues the material
with an almost totemic quality. In this respect it provides an ideal
framing material for the carved figures.
