| Zagajewski was abandoned at birth; he was found in the church of Saint Barbara in Warsaw. He was places in an orphanage where he was given a name and was transferred between orphanages several times during his childhood. He never speaks about his schooling. He became a mason and helped on several stucco projects. In addition, he creates altars out of hundreds of pieces of delicately carved clay.
