Gérard Nicollet

About the work of Gérard Nicollet, the art historian Aurélien Demaison speaks of “oeuvres-mondes” and places it in the movement of contemporary animism. Gérard Nicollet's drawings invite you to discover an unknown universe in which unexpected encounters occur; in the center of magic eggs arise strange beings, men with heads of eyes, insects, motionless characters trapped in a network of ropes and criss-crossing threads, tight little bubbles from which eyes shine.

A cosmic, cellular geography emerges little by little from the tip of the pen, quill or pencil, in black and white or in color, influenzed by weaving, embroidery and friezes. A journey inside the body, under the skin, behind the eyelids.

Born in 1954 in Tunisia.

After a childhood spent in Rennes in Brittany where he went to school, he spent ten adventurous years during which he was in turn an actor, a cleaner, an investigator-codifier, a vegetarian cook or unemployed…before becoming a librarian specialized in music, then a documentalist. At the same time, in 2004, he published “Chercheurs de sons” (Ed. Alternatives), a book dedicated to the inventors of musical instruments and musical machines. He also created an eponymous blog (now discontinued) and writes several stories inspired by the world of sound.

At a very young age, after visiting le Palais idéal du Facteur Cheval in Hauterives and the Collection de l’art brut in Lausanne, he made many collages from scrap materials. In 1992, he met Raymond Reynaud, the main figure of singular art in France, and, after the latters’s death in 2007, became an active member of the AASRR (Association des Amis du Singulier Raymond Reynaud).
